I support an old friend, Liz Holtzman, who is running for Congress in New York’s 10th Congressional District in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. Just as she once helped lead the impeachment of Richard Nixon, Liz would expose the abuses of Donald Trump, and become a leader in the fight for women’s rights, environmental justice and so many causes she has long championed. We need Liz Holtzman back in Congress.

Endorsement announcement: Liz Holtzman has always been among the first and the bravest in our history, the smartest and the most trusted. She was the youngest woman elected to Congress, the first woman District Attorney, and also the only woman to become Comptroller of New York City.

Now, she is the one and only candidate in this race who has created enduring structures to advance justice, including the bipartisan Congressional Women’s Caucus, a crucial group to which Democratic Congresswomen elected and re-elected her as co-chair. She is also the one and only candidate who has authored significant federal legislation, including the Rape Privacy Act and the extension of the ERA ratification deadline.

This country, not just New York City, must benefit from Liz's leadership. That's why I am endorsing Liz for New York’s 10th congressional district. We can't do this without you and your vote -- so go out and vote for Liz in the primary on August 23.

Remember, the Voting booth is the one place where we are all equal!

. . . Liz Holtzman. . .is the very epitome of what we hope for when we send representatives to Washington.

Subsequently: Liz is the one candidate who actually voted to impeach a president which led to his resignation. Liz has decades of experience taking on presidents and fighting to protect our democratic values. She was one of the first national leaders to call for impeaching Trump and then wrote the definitive book on how to impeach him. She wrote the special prosecutor law and wrote the law blocking Nixon's proposed state secrets act, and she brought a landmark lawsuit to stop the illegal bombing of Cambodia. In this post-Roe v. Wade world, women can no longer be ignored or silenced. We will not be treated as invisible or as second-class citizens by political opponents or by our government.

“Liz is the champion we need at this perilous time for us all. She is a fierce and fearless leader who can find innovative, effective ways to defend choice.

This is no time for a timid response. This is a time for tough, smart and determined leadership, and that is what Liz uniquely provides that no other candidate in this race has the track record to do. From the moment she arrives in Congress, Liz will command respect and win the support of her colleagues.

There are few leaders I trust more than Liz Holtzman to defend a woman's right to control her life and body. Liz has not only a tested track record of unflagging commitment to advancing women's rights, but also the character and commanding presence that it takes to stand up to opponents and to speak truth to the most powerful among us.” ~ Sonia Ossario, President, NOW New York

The Feminist Majority PAC

The Feminist Majority proudly endorses Liz Holtzman, a legendary champion for women’s equality and reproductive rights, and a strong, effective opponent against a President who abused his power. I have had the privilege of working closely with her during her days in Congress on the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA); her leadership and strategy was crucial in winning the Congressional extension of the time limit for the ERA. From that day until now, she has worked closely with feminists for women’s rights and equality.

Liz is brilliant, an original thinker and a truly gifted, successful strategist who knows how to get the job done in Congress and the courts. Her leadership was crucial in the impeachment and departure of a corrupt president and she will be the leader in the fight to bring former President Trump and those who conspired with him to justice. She has the guts and the experience to be crucial in the fight to do just that. ~ Eleanor Smeal, President, Feminist Majority

former United States Senator and Basketball Hall of Famer

Liz Holtzman is the same compelling and no longer underestimated woman who defeated a nearly 50-year incumbent (he opposed the ERA!) some years ago. I am supporting the very same Liz Holtzman who has the energy, integrity and empathy to be our neighborhoods’ Member of Congress. Please vote for Liz Holtzman on August 23rd.

Ruth Messinger,

former Manhattan Borough President

Former Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger endorsed Liz Holtzman today saying “we need her courage, her experience, and her smarts to fight for our abortion rights, to take on the radical right, and to protect our Democracy. The stakes could not be higher – we need her NOW in this fight for our rights and our country.”

Messinger’s endorsement follows on the heels of endorsements by the Daily News, Gloria Steinem, the National Organization of Women, Feminist Majority, former Senator Bill Bradley and State Senator Tom Duane as well as others.

“I’m proud to have Ruth’s endorsement. As Manhattan Borough President she was a strong voice for equality and justice. She spent a career standing up to powerful interests on behalf of working New Yorkers,” Liz said. “We have an immediate battle on our hand to overcome the destructive ruling by the Supreme Court on Roe – women are under assault. I have worked with Ruth before and I will work with her and others now to defend and expand our rights.”

Messinger served from 1978 to 1989 on the City Council representing the Upper West Side of Manhattan, where she was a fierce advocate for rent control. From 1990 to 1998, she served as Manhattan Borough President.

Tom Duane,

former New York State Senator and City Council Member; LGBTQ+ Activist

I am enthusiastically and unequivocally endorsing Liz Holtzman for Congress. I had the honor and privilege of working for New York City Comptroller Liz Holtzman. Liz Holtzman used the power and stature of that office to protect the environment, demand human and civil rights through responsible investment strategies impacting people in our City, the country, indeed the world. As Comptroller, Liz challenged corporations on their commitment to long-term sustainability, employee welfare and equality in the workplace. The Comptroller is the custodian of the funds and assets of the New York City Pension Funds. Liz Holtzman, as Comptroller, addressed issues with corporate governance -- policies and practices, while always working to improve the performance of the City's Pension Funds Investments, because New York City retirees deserve to have the best possible life.

I am also endorsing Liz Holtzman as a former elected official and as an individual because I cannot stress how strongly I believe we need a Congress Member with the experience, intelligence, diligence and integrity that defines Liz Holtzman. Liz Holtzman is fearless and determined and she is exactly the representative we need and deserve to have in Washington D.C. during these perilous times. We cannot wait any longer to hear her clear, unwavering, powerful, dignified voice. We need Liz Holtzman to win some battles for the sake of our district, city, country; our parents, children, neighbors; for righteousness, democracy and our future.

As an activist, progressive Democrat, Elected Official (former) and now again an activist -- and a teacher/professor, I support Liz Holtzman. As a City Council Member, I enshrined in law, over the objections of then Mayor Giuliani, an agency to support people living with HIV/AIDS, when Rudy Giuliani tried to eliminate that safety net. We need Liz Holtzman because our nation, and especially our city, is once again having difficulty meeting the needs brought on by two public health crises.

As a New York State Senator, I forced passage of inclusive Hate Crimes legislation in my first term. I was the first NYS Legislator to introduce Same-Sex Marriage Equality legislation in 2001 and fought for and saw its passage in 2011. In 1999 I introduced the first Safe Schools Anti-Bullying Legislation in New York State which, when passed in 2010, for the first time in New York State legislative history included language inclusive of gender identity and expression and weight.

While New York State has ratified the Federal Equal Rights Amendment, NYS does not have its own constitutional ERA and I carried that legislation in the NYS Senate. As an activist, I put together the coalition that secured landmark tenant protections. I have always fought for those who depend on public entitlements, who struggle to get a good education, for mothers who struggle to support their families, for women to have complete autonomy over their bodies, for immigrants, for incarcerated people, for people whose voices are not being heard.

Everything that I fought for as an activist and as a City Council Member, State Senator and still today as a teacher is being taken away or is at the highest possible risk of being taken away. If it were not real, it would be unimaginable. My life's work is at risk.

Liz Holtzman's strong, confident voice, her fighting spirit, her determination, her strength -- we have been missing its amplification for too long. No one took on the challenges of Watergate like Liz Holtzman. We need Liz Holtzman to help us overcome the even greater threats to Democracy we face now. There was no more tenacious hunter of Nazis than Liz Holtzman. We have never faced a more vicious, dangerous right-wing movement in this country than we do today. We need Liz Holtzman to fight for us. And I cannot neglect to say this -- Liz Holtzman is a team player, a joy to work alongside and a mensch (which I claim is a non-binary title -- like State Senator or Congress Member)!

Liz Holtzman is the same compelling and no longer underestimated woman who defeated a nearly 50-year incumbent (he opposed the ERA!) some years ago. I am supporting the very same Liz Holtzman who has the energy, integrity and empathy to be our neighborhoods' Member of Congress. Please vote for Liz Holtzman on August 23rd.

Go for Liz Holtzman: The Daily News makes its choice in new Brooklyn-Manhattan congressional district

. . .The class of the large field is Liz Holtzman, who’s served the city well in Congress, as Brooklyn district attorney, as city comptroller and as a civically engaged member of the private sector since. We proudly endorse Holtzman and urge voters to send her back to Washington.

. . .every bit as plugged in and energetic as her competitors, amplifying her breadth of experience and in-depth knowledge of both national and local issues. In fact, it’s apparent her age has given her a sense of urgency to do big things for her constituents and her country. . .

What distinguishes Holtzman is her singular experience in checking the abuses of presidents going back to Nixon. In the runup to the 2024 election, the next Congress will be a crucial period, in which a Republican election denier, quite possibly Donald Trump, may be laying the groundwork to seize power regardless of who the voters choose. It would be wise for Democrats to elect a specialist in calling out and curbing such mischief. (Dan Goldman, lead majority counsel in Trump’s first impeachment, gets a check in this column too, but he lacks Holtzman’s granular understanding of a broad range of other challenges.)

Holtzman combines that with an unrivaled breadth and depth of knowledge on how the gears of government turn; pragmatic policy instincts, and a sensitive ear for constituent problems. In the hour long conversation we had with her, she had a close-to-the-ground understanding of the challenges people are facing, from the Lower East Side to Red Hook to Park Slope to Sunset Park.

. . .Holtzman is the one to elect.
